Wet Rot

Wet Rot is a form of fungal decay. Wet rot is the generic term that describes timber decaying naturally when subject to moisture content above 50%.

The most common forms of wet rot encountered, specifically to damp proofing or rising damp treatments, are joist ends, floor boards and skirting boards which have come into contact with damp walls.

During our rising damp treatments, and once we have removed surface plaster back to the brickwork, our technicians are trained to observe and report on any timbers that are suffering or likely to suffer from wet rot that can also lead to timber infestation.

What is the difference between wet rot and dry rot?

The main difference from a client’s perspective is the cost and amount of work involved to treat dry rot and wet rot.

Unlike dry rot, wet rot cannot spread through brickwork so tends to more localised therefore it is significantly less destructive and far easier to treat. You will generally find it in timbers with a moisture content of more than 30 % whereas dry rot is found in timbers with a moisture content between 20% and 30%.

Tyne tees damp proofing repaired my old building in Durham which had a wet rot and weevil problem in the front room floor and floor joists. I actually had 3 quotes inspections from different companies and I felt tyne tees damp proofing had a real grasp of the issue and how to fix. They were reasonably priced and carried out the work to repair and replace/reposition airbrick. As they say to do we contacted 3 companies for quotes and instantly decided to go with Brett’s company after being impressed with their approach & solution to our specific problem. Their quote came in the best and the work they proposed was by far the most thorough so it was a ‘no brainer’. The ‘personal approach”’ was excellent from 1st contact to bringing his team to assess the job at a time to suit us and arranging a date to suit both parties, all very thorough. Brett’s brother arrived on the dot at 8.30am and worked till 7pm!, as promised they would try they even somehow managed to replace our living room floor boards without having to remove the skirting boards which was a great help to us with a new carpet fitting booked in for few days later. The lads cleared & tided up afterwards to a very high standard, it was spotless. Damp issues can cause stress & upheaval but the service provided was superb and we can’t recommend or thank Brett & his superb team enough. Thank you guys.
